Credit Hours System

Gulf University applies the American Credit Hours System. One credit hour equals 15 classroom hours per semester, equivalent to 4 NQF credits. Bachelor programs consist of 120-136 credit hours including general requirements, core courses, and electives.

The academic year spans 4 years with approximately 15 credit hours per regular semester across two regular semesters (Fall/Spring) plus one optional summer semester. Regular semesters run 14-16 weeks; summer semesters minimum 7 weeks.

Credit Accumulation

Students must accumulate 30 credit hours minimum (120 NQF credits) at each level to advance. Notional hours equal course credit hours multiplied by 40, covering on-campus and off-campus learning activities.

Student Academic Load

  • Regular semesters: minimum 12 credit hours, maximum 19 credit hours.
  • Summer semester: maximum 9 credit hours.
  • Students may enroll below 12 credit hours once during their study period without penalty to minimum requirements.
  • Final semester may exceed maximum limits up to 21 credit hours if CGPA ≥3.00 and graduation requires those hours.

Suspend Study

Students may suspend studies for one semester with relevant dean approval. Suspension excludes from maximum study period.

Repeat Courses

  • Failed courses must be repeated; minimum 60% required.
  • Passing courses with C or higher GPA may be repeated; new mark applies.
  • All grades appear with "R" designation.

Student Dismissal

Dismissal occurs upon:

  • CGPA below 2.00 for 2 consecutive semesters after warning.
  • Failing any course 3 times.
  • Discontinuing 2 semesters without approved excuse.
  • Exceeding maximum study period.

Note: University Council may exempt once for 1-2 semesters with accepted excuse. Students completing 75% program credit hours are exempt from low CGPA dismissal if within maximum period.

Mass Communication Path Selection

Third-semester passers become eligible for study path selection (Media, Journalism, Public Relations). Fourth-semester passers proceed with path selection.

Curriculum Changes

  • Changes apply to newly admitted students.
  • Existing students study equivalent newly-added courses for deleted ones still needed.
  • Completed deleted courses remain on academic records.

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass all program courses with minimum 2.00 CGPA and complete within minimum/maximum study periods.

Visiting Student

Visiting students are registered elsewhere but enroll for specific courses one semester at GU.
