Core Assessment Principles

Gulf University ensures assessment aligns with course intended learning outcomes (CILOs) using "valid, reliable, fair" methods that respect student dignity, including those with special needs.

The university implements measures for student work verification, marking consistency, and accurate grade recording. Clear formal procedures govern internal and external assessment verification for reliability and fitness for purpose.

Major Assessments

Midterm and final examinations are centrally administered during published examination periods per the Academic Calendar.

Student Responsibilities for Online Assessment

Students must:

Ensure software readiness and close competing applications

Open camera and share screen as requested

Follow strict online proctoring requirements

Commit to scheduled assessment times

Feedback on Assessed Work

Students receive timely feedback to:

  • Inform progress in the course
  • Enhance understanding of expectations
  • Deepen content learning
  • Develop awareness of disciplinary norms

Accommodations for Students with Special Needs

Adjustments include:

Examination venue modifications

Assistance with reading assignments/exams

Writing assistance for assessments

Flexible and additional time allowances

Deferred and Late Assessment

Deferred Assessment

Students may apply with justifiable excuse to instructors (semester work) or Admission and Registration (major assessments). Deferred major assessment fees apply.

Late Assessment

10% reduction of student's mark will apply for semester coursework submitted late.

Assessment Appeals

First-Level Appeal

Students appeal directly to instructors for semester work or to Admission and Registration for major assessments.

Second-Level Appeal

Additional opportunity for major assessments through College Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee (C-TLAC), requiring explanation and appeal fees.
